Keynote: NGI Mid Term Review - Impressive Results Deserve Follow-up

Douwe D. Breimer was born and raised in Oudemirdum (Fr), studied pharmacy at the University of Groningen (1962-1970), obtained a PhD (cum laude) from the University of Nijmegen (1974) and is, since 1975, full professor of pharmacology at Leiden University. He was Rector from 2001 - 2007 and also Chairman of the Executive Board from 2005 to 2007. He is (co-) author of over 500 scientific articles and promoter of 50 PhD students and was scientific director of the Leiden/Amsterdam Center for Drug Research from 1991 to 2000. From 1995 - 2000 he was a member of the Governing Board of NWO.

He received honorary doctorates from the University of Ghent, the Semmelweis University in Budapest, the University of Uppsala, the Hoshi University in Tokyo, the University of London, the University of Navarra in Pamplona and the Université de Montréal. He is a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences, corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Belgium, foreign member of the Academie Nationale de Pharmacie in Paris and a foreign member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in the US.

He was a member of the first Innovation Platform led by the Prime Minister and is now a member of the top team ‘life sciences & health’(2011). He is among others Chairman of the programme committee systems biology NWO, president of the implementation committee sector plans physics and chemistry, Chairman of the Board of Life Sciences Partners (venture capital company in Amsterdam), Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Delft University of Technology, member of the Board of Directors of the KULeuven, member of the Governing Body of University College Cork, chairman of the Board of Trustees of Museum Boerhaave, member of the Board of Trustees of NCBNaturalis.
